Diagnostic and Foetal

Procedures

At Sound Start, we offer a wide range of diagnostic and foetal procedures to provide expectant parents with detailed insights into their pregnancy and the health of their unborn baby. Our clinic is dedicated to offering compassionate and comprehensive care, utilising the latest technology to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Two of the most commonly performed procedures at our clinic are Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS), both of which are diagnostic tests usually performed to exclude chromosomal or genetic issues in foetuses.

Understanding Diagnostic and Foetal Procedures

Diagnostic and foetal procedures are important for detecting potential health issues and genetic conditions in a developing baby. These procedures can provide valuable information that helps parents make informed decisions about their pregnancy and prepare for any potential challenges.

Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a diagnostic procedure typically performed after 15 weeks of pregnancy. It involves extracting a small amount of amniotic fluid, which surrounds the baby in the uterus, to analyse for chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders, and certain infections.

  • Chromosomal Abnormalities: Amniocentesis can detect chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome. It provides a definitive diagnosis, which is crucial for parents who may need to make important decisions about their pregnancy.
  • Genetic Disorders: The procedure can also test for genetic disorders like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anaemia, and Tay-Sachs disease, particularly if there is a family history of these conditions.
  • Foetal Infections: The test can identify infections such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) or toxoplasmosis, which may affect the baby’s development.

During amniocentesis, a thin needle is inserted through the mother’s abdomen into the uterus under ultrasound guidance to withdraw a sample of amniotic fluid. The procedure is relatively quick and generally well-tolerated, though some women may experience mild discomfort or cramping. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis, and results are typically available within one to two weeks.

While amniocentesis is a safe procedure, it does carry a small risk of complications, including miscarriage (approximately 1 in 400 procedures), infection, or injury to the baby. Our team will discuss these risks with you in detail and help you weigh the benefits and potential concerns based on your individual situation.

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)

Chorionic Villus Sampling is another diagnostic procedure offered at Sound Start Sydney, typically performed between 11 and 15 weeks of pregnancy. CVS involves collecting a small sample of cells from the placenta to test for chromosomal abnormalities and genetic disorders.

  • Early Detection of Chromosomal Abnormalities: Like amniocentesis, CVS can detect chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome. One advantage of CVS is that it can be performed earlier in the pregnancy, allowing for earlier decision-making.
  • Genetic Testing: CVS can test for genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis and Tay-Sachs disease, especially if there is a known risk or family history of these conditions.

There are two methods for performing CVS: transabdominal and transcervical.

  • Transabdominal: A needle is inserted through the abdomen, similar to amniocentesis, to collect placental tissue.
  • Transcervical: A catheter is inserted through the cervix to obtain the sample.

The choice of method depends on the location of the placenta and other factors. Our team will use ultrasound guidance to ensure the procedure is safe and accurate. The sample is then analysed, with results typically available in one to two weeks.

CVS carries a similar risk of miscarriage compared to amniocentesis, with an estimated risk of 1 in 400 procedures. Our experienced team will discuss these risks with you and help determine whether CVS is the right choice based on your specific circumstances.
