Maternal Fetal Medicine

Consultations

At Sound Start, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for expectant mothers and their unborn babies.

Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) consultations are designed to offer specialised support and expert guidance throughout your pregnancy journey. We also offer pre-pregnancy consultations, where we discuss the approach to, and management of, a potentially challenging pregnancy.

Whether you’re experiencing a high-risk pregnancy or simply seeking reassurance, our team of experienced specialists are here to ensure the best possible outcomes for you and your baby.

Common Referrals to an MFM Include

  1. Pregnancies in the setting of an underlying medical condition affecting the pregnant woman.

Women with pre-existing medical conditions like Diabetes Mellitus, chronic Hypertension, Lupus; or genetic conditions like Cystic Fibrosis can experience complications during pregnancy. Our team of clinicians is among the most experienced and skilled to guide management of such complex pregnancies.

2. Placental Disease

If the pregnancy is complicated by placental insufficiency- evidenced by blood pressure issues in the pregnant woman, or by growth restriction in the foetus- we are the place to come to for ongoing surveillance. As advisors to obstetricians in some of the major tertiary hospitals in the city, we are best placed to offer tailor-made advice re: management of the pregnancy to yourselves and to your obstetricians.

3. Previous Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes

If you have unfortunately experienced an adverse pregnancy outcome in a past pregnancy, there may be a variable risk of recurrence of a similar complication with the next ones. With significant experience managing such conditions (e.g.: severe pre-eclampsia, very preterm delivery, stillbirth, recurrent miscarriages, etc), and the added value of spearheading cutting-edge research in this space, our team is very capable of advising management plans to optimise outcomes in the current and future pregnancies.

4. Foetal Anomalies

Our skilled sonographers and their meticulous approach to screening for structural anomalies in the fetus maximises the chance of diagnosing structural aberrations in the fetus. If an abnormality is detected, the approach to the pregnancy could be very different, with potential need for involvement of a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians. Our team not only has expertise dealing with such complex pregnancies, but also has strong links to all major tertiary hospitals in the city, thereby being able to offer easy referral pathways, taking some of the stress out of the situation for the family.

At Sound Start, we understand that every pregnancy is unique.

Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine consultations are tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient. We employ the latest technology, including advanced ultrasound and imaging techniques, to provide accurate diagnoses and develop personalised care plans.

Our multidisciplinary team collaborates closely with your obstetrician and other healthcare providers to ensure seamless communication and coordinated care. We are committed to providing a supportive environment where you can feel comfortable discussing your concerns and receiving the expert care you deserve.
